Ce livre évoque l'histoire d'une famille occitane, Nous la découvrons au début du 13ème siècle puis, beaucoup plus tard au 20ème et 22ème siècles.
Le 13ème siècle est le théatre de massacres perpétrés par les Français en Occitanie, c'est la croisade des Albigeois, officiellement destinée à éradiquer l'hérésie cathare. C'est en fait un génocide : les Cathares disparaissent en moins d'un siècle.
